Essential Video Interview Preparation Tips for Job Seekers

Video Interview Preparation tips to boost confidence: master eye contact, polish your background, and present yourself professionally every time.

Essential Video Interview Preparation Tips for Job Seekers

Some time ago, I wrote about building rapport during video interviews. That topic matters because connecting virtually is often difficult. Still, I realized that many job seekers need more basic guidance on video interview preparation. Over the years, I have coached many candidates through this process. During our work together, I noticed simple but important steps that often get overlooked. Today, I want to share those steps with you.

Eye Contact in Video Interviews

Eye contact builds trust and connection in any interview. In the United States, in particular, eye contact strongly influences how you are perceived. If you avoid it, you risk appearing disengaged or even untrustworthy. This reaction can reduce your chances of receiving an offer.

Maintaining eye contact through a webcam is a challenge, however, because many candidates naturally watch the interviewer’s face or gestures instead of the camera. As a result, the interviewer sees them looking downward or away from them. That subtle detail can send the wrong message to the interviewer.

To correct this, train yourself to look directly into the camera. Doing so creates the appearance of natural eye contact for the interviewer. It may feel awkward at first, but it strengthens your ability to connect and convey interest.

One helpful trick is to place a sticky note or small reminder near the camera lens. That mental cue will guide your gaze back to the camera and keep your eye contact consistent throughout the interview.

Professional Appearance and Background

Another important part of video interview preparation is ensuring a professional appearance for both you and your surroundings. I once worked with a candidate who overlooked this...in the background of his interview, a large poster contained an inappropriate slogan. Although the hiring manager laughed, she quickly questioned his judgment.

He did not receive an offer.

Your background tells a story before you answer a single question. That is why a practice run is so valuable. Conduct a trial session with your computer and camera at the same time of day as your scheduled interview. Lighting changes throughout the day, and these shifts can create shadows or glare. Testing in advance gives you time to adjust so that your face remains clear and well-lit.

During the test run, center yourself in the frame with the camera at eye level. Make sure the view is sharp and not too close. Scan the space behind you and remove anything distracting. Keep bookshelves, tables, and decorations neat and neutral.

This preparation allows you to see exactly how you will appear on screen, with steady lighting and a polished background.
